SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE INFLUENCE OF SOWING DATE ON SUBSEQUENT FLOWERING AND SEED YIELD OF CARROT cv. "CAPE MARKET" IN ZAMBIA

Authors:   W.W. Msikita, N.A. Mnzava
Abstract:
The influence of sowing date on root growth and subsequent flowering and seed yield in chilled (10°C 6 weeks) and unchilled stecklings is reported. Sowings made from January to April resulted in a progressive prolongation of root growth and subsequently, the time of steckling flowering and seed maturation. Chilling enhanced uniform, early flowering and higher seed yield (0.43 t ha-1) regardless of planting date. The significance of timing field planting in a subtropical lowland (ca 15°S lat. 987 m asl.) is illustrated.
