ISHS Acta Horticulturae 217: IV International Workshop on Fire Blight

DISINFECTION OF PRUNING SHEARS FOR THE PREVENTION OF THE FIRE BLIGHT TRANSMISSION

Authors:   H. Kleinhempel, M. Nachtigall, W. Ficke, F. Ehrig
Abstract:
Resulting from scanning-electron microscopic investigations on cutting tools it could be pointed out that the deficient effect of disinfectants, when cutting small woods attacked by fire-blight, is to be attributed to the surface condition of the shear. Cells of the infective agent (Erwinia amylovora (Burrill) Winslow et al.) being located is smallest caverns and cavities are not hit and could be one cause for spreading the fire-blight in pruning during the vegetation period.

Foremost, after surface coating of the pruning shears a satisfactory effect of different disinfectants for inhibiting transmission of E. amylovora could be attained.
