ISHS Acta Horticulturae 216: III International Symposium on Carnation Culture

SOIL SUPPRESSIVE TO FUSARIUM WILT OF CARNATION: STUDIES ON MECHANISM OF SUPPRESSIVENESS (°).

Authors:   L. Cugudda, A. Garibaldi
Abstract:
The dynamics of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. dianthi population in a steam sterilized soil infested with F. dianthi and with antagonistic Fusaria was investigated in the presence or absence of carnation plants. In the soil, the pathogen population was similar with or without the antagonistic organisms. On the contrary the presence of antagonistic Fusaria in the rhizosphere of carnation plants decreased the pathogen population significantly. We hypothesize that the suppressiveness is due to nutrient competition between pathogen and antagonistic Fusaria in the rhizosphere.
