ISHS Acta Horticulturae 216: III International Symposium on Carnation Culture

INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS IN PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION OF CARNATIONS

Authors:   Ch. Hoogendoorn, L.D. Sparnaaij
Abstract:
The major developments in the last four years are:
  • Increased carnation production in Spain, Colombia and other Latin American countries, a more or less stable production level in most other major production areas like Israel, Kenya and the Netherlands and a decline in production in Italy.
  • A further increase of the market share for Colombia in the USA and a strong increase of the market share for Spain in Europe.
  • Popularisation of flower consumption, stimulated by (or resulting in?) an increase in number of sales outlets, in particular in supermarkets, garden centres and flower stalls.
  • Diversification in cut flower production leading to a relative weakening in the position of the carnation within the assortment. This is partly compensated by diversification within the carnation (Dianthus) assortment.
