Abstract:
Breeding for resistance to Fusarium oxysporum f.sp dianthi was carried out between 1975 and 1982. Because of a lack of basic information on the host-parasite relationship, efficiency of the screening procedure was unsatisfactory. Steady progress could nevertheless be achieved, resulting in a release of breeding material in 1982. In practical breeding and in official variety trials, the shortcomings of the screening procedure proved more troublesome, however.

Attempts at improvement are based on results of basic research on host-parasite relationship. Sofar, information on histological changes in the vascular system has led to improved interpretation of internal symptoms; information on passive transport of spores through wounds, has led to methods to minimize root damage.

The existence of two distinct resistance mechanisms is postulated:

resistance to penetration of the roots, whether actively or passively through wounds, and
resistance against growth of the fungus through the vascular system.

The consequences of such a situation for screening and breeding are discussed.
