ISHS Acta Horticulturae 215: Seed Research in Horticulture

RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SEED VIGOUR, SEED SIZE AND TESTA COLOUR IN GREEN WRINKLED PEAS

Author:   Halina W. Woyke
Abstract:
Baumunk-Wende /1981/ observed a high correlation between seed vigour and testa colour in wrinkled green peas seeds. We wished to verify her observations for the cultivars grown in Poland.

Seeds from 8 cultivars /altogether 96 samples/ were divided into 3 following groups each:

  • green,
  • yellow-green
  • yellow

Vigour by electroconductivity and 1000 seeds weight were noted.

In 7 cultivars on 8 investigated the highest vigour in the majority of samples /60–100 %/ characterized the green-yellow seeds. It is contradictory with Baumunk-Wende, 1981 results, who found, that the highest vigour had the green seeds and the lowest the yellow ones. We observed that vigour was correlated with the 1000 seeds weight. The mean vigour for 96 samples of the mentioned above 8 cultivars was for the green, yellow-green and yellow seeds 36.3; 32.1 and 39.1 microsiemens x cm-1/g respectively. The mean 1000 seeds weight was 195, 199 and 193 g respectively.

It is supposed that in our research the green-yellow seeds had higher vigour as those, which obtained a better, more advanced maturity stage than the green ones.
