Abstract:
In the Netherlands an advisory service for potato late blight was established at the very early date of 1928. The messages had the character of hindcasts of "critical periods". In 1962 these late warnings were replaced by early warnings based upon the forecasted weather and the epidemiological situation as interpreted by a team of experts.
For the future it is foreseen that computer calculations which now play their role in the meteorological part of the system, also will be introduced for the epidemiological aspect.
It is however expected that for a long time ahead human intervention will be needed to decide on the most appropriate timing and wording of the warnings.
