ISHS Acta Horticulturae 213: Recent and Future Developments of the Potato in the World

SOME INTERESTING ASPECTS OF RECENT AND EXPECTED DEVELOPMENTS IN POTATO BREEDING IN NORTH AMERICA (CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA)

Author:   J.J. Pavek
Abstract:
Twenty-two potato breeding programs in Canada and the USA grew 1,054,600 single hills in 1986. Seventy-four percent of the single hills were for direct varietal selection, 20% for germplasm development, and 6% for genetic studies. Twenty of these programs are public and two are private. The various goals, plans, and procedures of the breeding programs are discussed.
