Abstract:
Twenty-two potato breeding programs in Canada and the USA grew 1,054,600 single hills in 1986. Seventy-four percent of the single hills were for direct varietal selection, 20% for germplasm development, and 6% for genetic studies.
Twenty of these programs are public and two are private.
The various goals, plans, and procedures of the breeding programs are discussed.
