| Abstract:
The use of improved potato germplasm is one of the factors that contributed to the expansion of potato production in tropical Africa. There are good examples of national programs in which the selection and use of better varieties have more than doubled potato yields. Availability of good sources of improved germplasm, establishment and use of realistic screening criterias and procedures and adequate international support appear to be some of the reasons for the relatively rapid development of suitable varieties in some of the national potato programs in tropical Africa. There are data that show the potential use of true potato seed (TPS) for the commercial propagation of potato in tropical Africa. Transplants and seedling tubers from TPS have been shown to give higher tuber yields than the locally available clonal seed tuber. | |
