ISHS Acta Horticulturae 213: Recent and Future Developments of the Potato in the World

SOME INTERESTING ASPECTS OF RECENT AND EXPECTED DEVELOPMENTS IN POTATO STORAGE AND UTILIZATION IN NORTH AMERICA

Author:   Paul H. Orr
Abstract:
Long-term storage for processing is an essential part of the North American potato industry. Typically, in North America, a specific type of potato is produced and stored long-term to supply a particular type of processing market. Selected requirements in storage and utilization for processing are discussed. Those requirements are:
  • to obtain and maintain better internal quality for processing over extended storage periods.
  • to design and construct storage facilities that provide specific, stringent storage environments long-term,
  • to develop a potato and handling system interface that does not degrade internal quality during handling from storage and shipment.

Completed, current and anticipated research and development efforts are noted. Suggestions for cooperative interchanges are given.
