ISHS Acta Horticulturae 213: Recent and Future Developments of the Potato in the World

DEVELOPMENTS IN POTATO STORAGE AND UTILIZATION IN ASIA

Author:   M. Thongjiem
Abstract:
This survey paper briefly describes the research and development in potato storage and utilization and the research priorities for Asia. Seed potato storage by using diffused light storage method has been widely adopted by farmers in Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines and Sri Lanka. Storage of ware potatoes still needs further research in order to arrive at suitable low cost methods that can be adopted by farmers in S. Asia. Cold storage is now being used in Bangladesh, Pakistan and India for a larger part of the winter crops. Table potato storage is not a significant problem in the highland tropical areas in the Philippines and in Indonesia with year round harvests.

Utilization of potato is being studied in many countries to introduce potato into their diets in an acceptable form. Simple potato processing which can be implemented at village level is needed. Potato processing factories are established in some countries, however their products are expensive because of the high production costs.
