Abstract:
From 1979 to 1986 surveys on bacterial and fungal diseases were made in several African and non-African countries.
The results for the African countries indicate a broad spread of the most common potato pathogens (table 1). In total 5 bacterial and 29 fungal diseases have been recorded out of which three bacterial and 9 fungal diseases were considered to be important (table 2). There is a tendency of increasing importance for the fungal pathogens, Verticillium albo-atrum (wilt) and Fusarium solani (wilt) and Spongospora subterranea (powdery scab), and the bacterial organism Erwinia chrysanthemi. As only a few regions in Africa were surveyed information is incomplete.
