SURVEY OF DISEASES AND PESTS IN AFRICA: PESTS

Author:   K.V. Raman
Abstract:
Detailed field and storage surveys of potato insect pests in Africa are lacking. From limited information, it appears that Potato Tuber Moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller); Aphids, Myzus persicae (Sulzer); Aulacorthum solani (Kaltenbach) and Leafminer fly, Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) are important. Other pests which are occasional in importance are cutworms, Agrotis segetum, Agrotis ipsilon; leafbeetles, Epilachna spp, mole crickets, Gryllotalpa africana, Desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, Mites, Polyphagotarsonemus latus and various species of root-knot nematodes. A brief description, lifehistory and control of the important major pests is discussed.
