Abstract:
Production of the potato in the developing world has increased faster in recent years than any other major food crop.
Along with this increase in production has come the emergence of new potato research associations which provide an outlet for the scientific achievements to potato researchers.
During this same period, the Consultantives Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) sponsored the development of a major research institution for potatoes, the International Potato Center, due to the increasing role the potato was playing as a major food and the potential which still existed for explanation.
These new entities are now joining the older research associations to provide a major force in the improvement of the potato and its development as a major staple world food.
