Abstract:
In the past we have received several requests from our members in developing countries for a workshop or symposium on potato.
During a meeting with Dr.
Menini, the representative of FAO in the Council of ISHS, some fields of interest of his Horticultural Department were discussed for obtaining a better link between research and more practical orientated activities.
One of the fields mentioned was potato.
After contact with Dr.
Van der Zaag and Dr.
Van Loon of the European Potato Association the idea was born to organize a workshop in Wageningen with representatives of the five potato Associations in the world for North America, South America, Africa, Asia and Europe and with researchers from the Centro Internacional de la Papa - CIP - in Peru or from the regional centres of this organization.
In a preparatory meeting in April 1986 the possibilities, the set-up and the financial aspects were discussed.
With the financial assistance of CIP, FAO (through ISHS) and ISHS it was possible to arrange for subvention of travel expenses for representatives of the mentioned associations.
One year later in April 1987 we had the first international meeting on potato research and it gave indeed satisfaction to see and to hear how useful the meeting was.
I am sure that after this first meeting a follow-up will be realized.
The Executive Committee of ISHS has approved at their meeting of 1–3 August 1987 in Budapest that a limited group of representatives of the interested organizations will be supported to maintain contacts and to make propositions for future activities.
With the assistance of editors for each section, Prof.
Hermsen, Ir.
Van Loon, Ir.
Heesen and Dr.
Turkensteen and with the secretarial assistance of Mrs.
Mulder-Jurgens of ISHS, also arranging necessary retyping, we can present you in this Acta Horticulturae 213 the lectures and the results of the intensive discussions.
One can read the recommendations and find out what should be done in future.
My special thanks go to Mr.
Sawyer of CIP, Mr.
Van der Zaag and Mr.
Van Bommel for all the preparatory work done in making this workshop so successful.
H.H. van der Borg
Secretary-General ISHS
