ISHS Acta Horticulturae 212: Symposium on In Vitro Problems Related to Mass Propagation of Horticultural Plants

MICROPROPAGATION OF FEIJOA SELLOWIANA BERG

Authors:   Sant S. Bhojwani, K. Mullins, D. Cohen
Abstract:
On a modified Murashige and Skoog's medium supplemented with 0.1 mg/1 BAP and 500 mg/1 CH, shoots from aseptic seedlings of Feijoa sellowian a showed 3 fold multiplication every 4 weeks. Single node segments from a 2-year-old plant exhibited almost 100% bud break and lateral shoot development, but this response dropped to 12% when the plant was 3-years old. Coppicing the plant at this stage provided cuttings that responded as those from a 2-year-old plant. However, shoots from cuttings of 2 to 4-year-old plants did not grow when planted on fresh medium. A limited multiplication of shoots in these cases was, however, achieved by leaving 1 or 2 lower nodes on the parent cutting while excising the axillary shoot and transferring the cutting to fresh medium.

In vitro formed shoots derived from seedlings or older plants readily rooted. Rooting was better in vivo than in vitro.
