| Abstract:
We have tried to propagate in vitro the two main species Castanea sativa and C. crenata used in the programmes of interspecific hybridization. The physiological condition of the mother-plant turns out to be determinant. Slow growing seedlings of chestnuts, placed in a greenhouse as soon as the tap-root appears, constitute the best source of explants. For adult material, buds from main or secondary shoots of layer beds are best for development in vitro; on the other hand, as the first two peaks of growth of the main shoots seem to coincide with the maximum quantities of phenolic compounds, these turn out to be the most favourable times for taking buds. We have however noted important intergenotypical differences. | |
