ISHS Acta Horticulturae 212: Symposium on In Vitro Problems Related to Mass Propagation of Horticultural Plants

COMPARISON OF PLANT AND YIELD CHARACTERS OF IN VITRO AND NORMAL PROPAGATED STRAWBERRY PLANTS

Authors:   R. Theiler-Hedtrich, H. Wolfensberger
Abstract:
Tissue culture (TC) and normal propagated (NP) strawberry plants from four cultivars Belrubi, Gorella, Red Gauntlet and Senga Sengana were compared in a randomized block design. Plants were planted end of July, runners per plant harvested and counted in autumn 1983, and yield, berry weight per plant and mean fruit weight were evaluated from 12 June until 9 July 1984. In general the TC propagated plants lead to an increased runner production but to smaller fruits (Gorella and Red Gauntlet) and to reduced yields (Gorella and Senga Sengana). The only exception were TC propagated plants from the cv Belrubi, which behaved like NP plants.
