MICROPROPAGATION OF ANTHURIUM SCHERZERIANUM: PROPAGATION SCHEMES AND PLANT CONFORMITY |

| Abstract:
Plants of Anthurium scherzerianum regenerated from spadix and leaf segments using different micropropagation schemes were examined for variation in ploidy and morphological characters. Chromosome counts and/or measurements of stomatal guard cell length of 377 plants revealed all but two to be diploid; one is tetraploid and another is a periclinal chimera with diploid epidermis and tetraploid core. Morphological variation occured in the form of malformed leaves and inflorescences, leaf variegation, dwarf plants, and variable degree of branching. No clear relationship could be established between the frequency of most types of variants and different paths of multiplication. The extent of variability was clearly less than that usually observed in seed-propagated cultivars. | |
