ISHS Acta Horticulturae 212: Symposium on In Vitro Problems Related to Mass Propagation of Horticultural Plants

CHANGING THE GROWTH AND MORPHOLOGY OF POTATO PLANTLETS IN VITRO BY VARYING THE ILLUMINATION SOURCE

Author:   J.E.A. Seabrook
Abstract:
Potato plantlets of cultivars (cvs.) 'Caribe' and 'Shepody' were grown in vitro and exposed to eight different lamp combinations; cool-white fluorescent; incandescent; cool-white fluorescent and incandescent; Agrolite fluorescent; Agrolite fluorescent and cool-white fluorescent; Grolux fluorescent; Grolux fluorescent and cool-white fluorescent; TL-84 fluorescent. The formation of compound leaflets and aerial roots at nodes appeared to be influenced by the lamp source. Certain lamps (e.g., TL-84) produced plantlets with short internodes which were unacceptable for potato multiplication regimes because of the risk of injury to the explants during dissection. A lamp combination of cool-white fluorescent and Agrolite fluorescent produced plantlets of both cvs. 'Shepody' and 'Caribe' which exhibited maximal measurements for the following characteristics: leaf area, number of leaves, stem length, fresh weight and dry weight. Thus, the size and shape of potato plantlets grown in vitro can be manipulated by the use of different kinds of lamps.
