ISHS Acta Horticulturae 212: Symposium on In Vitro Problems Related to Mass Propagation of Horticultural Plants

THE PHYSIOLOGICAL DISORDERS OF SOUR CHERRY CULTURES: NECROSIS AND VITRIFICATION

Authors:   B. Borkowska, L. Michalczuk
Abstract:
Two cultivars of sour cherry have been used for experiments: Schattenmorelle (Sch) and North Star (NS): The cultures were grown on MS medium (multiplication stage) or ½ MS salts and full strength remained components (rooting medium). Radioactive Ca was added to the rooting medium. Main pool of calcium was uptaken by single shoots of Schattenmorelle cv. during first 2–3 weeks of cultivation. It was followed by rapid increase of fresh weight of plantlets. No relationship has been found between necrosis of the leaves and their radioactivity.

Schattenmorelle and North Star cultures showed distinct symptoms of vitrification. For both cultivars, content of dry matter was evidently higher in healthy (H) leaves than in vitreous (V) ones. However, the metabolic activity of H leaves in comparison to V leaves was different in both cvs. For example, content of chlorophyll in H and V leaves was the same for Sch., but V leaves of NS contained more chlorophyll than H leaves.
