BACTERIAL CONTAMINATION IN TROPICAL HARDWOOD CULTURES |

| Abstract:
A range of commercially available sterilants and antibiotics were tested on stem and nodal bud explants of Nauclea diderrichii for their ability to control microbial contamination. Bacterial contamination was commonly associated with the cultures and was controlled by surface sterilisation of the explants in 17% 'Alcide-LD' for 1 hour followed by treatment with the antibiotic rifampicin at 50 mg 1-1. The incidence of bacterial and fungal contamination was higher in explants taken from the nodal region than in those taken from the stem internode. Bacteria may be associated with hairs present at the nodes. Pure cultures of these bacteria were isolated from different tissues and identified. | |
