ISHS Acta Horticulturae 211: The Role of Horticulture in Meeting the Food Demands of AD 2000, XXII IHC

FOREWORD

Authors:   Heiko H. van der Borg, B. Choudhury
Abstract:
The Programme Committee of the XXIInd International Horticultural Congress in Davis decided in consultation with the American Society for Horticultural Science and the ISHS to publish the papers of the one-day symposia and of some of the workshops held during this Congress.

The ASHS will publish the proceedings of 23 symposia and one workshop in HortScience while the ISHS will publish in 12 volumes of Acta Horticulturae 8 symposia, 3 workshops and a compilation of papers on different economic aspects presented in different sessions.

Although we had the intention to publish all these volumes in 1987, we did not manage to publish Acta 209 and 211.

We will publish these volumes as quickly as possible but we depend on authors and editors.

The Programme Committee and the ISHS are very grateful for the work done by Dr. B. Choudhury and Professor H.D. Tindall for this Acta number 211, titled The Role of Horticulture in Meeting the Food Demands of AD 2000.

Secretary-General I.S.H.S.

INTRODUCTION TO THE SYMPOSIUM

The food and nutrition situation in many developing countries will be quite serious when the human race steps into the new century.

Personally I am convinced that horticultural crops can play a major role in meeting many of the problems. However, the part to be played by fruits and vegetables and also the developed as well as the developing countries have to be clearly defined, understood and organised. The production and consumption of fruits and vegetables in the developing countries will have to be augmented and the consumption of food grains in these countries will have to be reduced and replaced by vegetables and fruits if a serious food and nutritional shortage is to be avoided. There could not have been a better forum to discuss this topic than the XXII Horticultural Congress.

With this idea I met the organizers of the Congress when I visited Davis in October, 1985 and suggested that a seminar may be held on this topic. The basic idea was to clearly bring out how the developing countries should co-operate among themselves to increase the production and consumption of horticultural crops and the role to be played by the developed countries to keep the less fortunate ones in this venture.

I was thankful to the organizers for accepting my proposal.

B. Choudhury
