BACTERIAL CANKER AND DIEBACK DISEASES OF APRICOTS

Author:   Z. Klement
Abstract:
Bacterial canker and dieback (apoplexy) diseases of apricot trees is an important factor in many apricot cultures where the winter temperatures drop below -5°C. Bacterial cankers develop only when the infection of trees takes place in winter months. In the first period of the pathogenesis the Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae utilizes sugars from the bark tissue, thus the infected parts become frost-sensitive. At low temperatures these tissues, in the presence of ice-nucleation active bacterial cells, are damaged by frost.
