FOREWORD

Abstract:
The Programme Committee of the XXIInd International Horticultural Congress in Davis decided in consultation with the American Society for Horticultural Science and the ISHS to publish the papers of the one-day symposia and of some of the workshops held during this Congress.

The ASHS will publish the proceedings of 23 symposia and one workshop in HortScience while the ISHS will publish in 12 volumes of Acta Horticulturae 8 symposia, 3 workshops and a compilation of papers on different economic aspects presented in different sessions.

Unfortunately this last publication of the congress serie has been delayed due to personal circumstances. The Programme Committee and the ISHS are very grateful for the work done by Professor S.A. Paunovic for this Acta number 209, titled Workshop on Apricot Culture and Decline.

PRESIDENT'S OPENING REMARKS

Dear Colleagues, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today, we hold the Second International Workshop on Apricot Culture and Apricot Decline: Reseach and Crop Improvement in Davis, U.S.A. It is a great pleasure and a special honour to greet you on behalf of the International Working Group on Apricot Culture and Apricot Decline, of the Fruit Section of the International Society for Horticultural Science and to Express our and my own great appreciation and gratitude to the Organizing and Programme Committee of the XXIInd International Horticultural Congress. Also to those who have sponsored and organized this Convention, with special thanks to Dr. B. Tucky, Jr., President of the I.S.H.S. and of the XXIInd International Congress; Ir. H.H. van der Borg, Secretary-General of the I.S.H.S., Dr. L. Sims, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Dr. A. Kader, Chairman of the Programme Committee and Dr. S. Reid, Workshop/Business Meeting Coordinator, as well as to the others within the mentioned Congress.

The Workshop will deal with the progress and problems of research on improvement of commercial apricot procuction. The discussion leader will introduce the topics: S.A. Paunovic: Apricot germplasm, breeding, selection, cultivars, rootstocks, environments: then open the session for contributions by Workshop participants, who are encouraged to contribute briefly and informally to the subject under discussion. The Workshop offers opportunity to those interested in apricots to meet and discuss subjects of mutual interest.

On behalf of the International Working Group, the Fruit Section, and the I.S.H.S. allows me to open this Workshop.

PREFACE

The Second International Workshop on Apricot Culture and Apricot Decline: Research and Crop Improvement was held during the XXII-nd International Horticultural Congress in Davis, U.S.A. on the 14th of August 1986. The participants of the VIIIth International Symposium on Apricot Culture and Decline and the Workshop on Apricot Gene Resources and Breeding, held in Kecksemet, Hungary, from 15–21 July 1985 advised to organize this Workshop. The Workshop was organized by the Working Group on Apricot Culture and Apricot Decline of the International Society for Horticultural Science, Fruit Section, in co-operation with the Organizing Committee of the mentioned Congress.

It was attended by more than 30 researchers and specialists from 11 countries.

This volume contains original editorial and invited papers. The invited papers were written after discussions, with special attention to the existing problems in different ecogeographical conditions and their in detail solutions, from the scientific and commercial point of view, including suggestions for the further work in practice and for scientific investigation.

The papers were divided into 4 sections.

  1. Germplasm, cultivars, rootstocks and environment;
  2. Breeding and selection of cultivars and rootstocks;
  3. Management and new technology;
  4. Diseases.

On behalf of the organizers of the workshop we want to thank all the authors and Ir. Heiko H. van der Borg, Secretary-General of I.S.H.S., as well as Miss Manon Benda, and other staff of I.S.H.S.- secretariat for their help in the preparation of this Acta.
