EXPERIENCES ON THE EFFECT OF VINE SPACING AND TRELLIS-TRAINING SYSTEM ON CANOPY MICRO-CLIMATE, VINE PERFORMANCE AND GRAPE QUALITY |

| Abstract:
In recent years several vineyards have been established in northern Italy to evaluate planting density and trellis-training systems. Geneva Double Curtain (GDC) was tested at different vine spacing and cordon arrangement (divided or undivided). Other systems, including traditional Arched Cane (AC), "T" Trellis (TT) and Simple Curtain (SC) were also established to assess their overall behaviour in the fertile soil of the Po valley. Researches investigated grape quality, yield components and single vine and vineyard performance as well as photosynthetic photon flux rate (PFR) in canopy exterior-interior and canopy light interception. The results of these studies make it possible to emphasise the advantages of dense planting (not less than 2 500 vine/ha) and top fruiting and renewal-area position when appropriate trellis-training methods are used. Guidelines are advanced under form of a vineyard design and management package aimed at a more efficient viticulture. | |
