ISHS Acta Horticulturae 206: Symposium on Grapevine Canopy and Vigor Management, XXII IHC

FOREWORD

Authors:   Heiko H. van der Borg, M. Kliewer
Abstract:
The Programme Committee of the XXIInd International Horticultural Congress in Davis decided in consultation with the American Society for Horticultural Science and the ISHS to publish the papers of the one-day symposia and of some of the workshops held during this Congress.

The ASHS will publish the proceedings of 23 symposia and one workshop in HortScience while the ISHS will publish in 12 volumes of Acta Horticulturae 8 symposia, 3 workshops and a compilation of papers on different economic aspects presented in different sessions.

We will publish these volumes in the first half of 1987.

This will be made possible with the important assistance we have received from the moderators and from the authors by using the proposed ISHS-publishing system.

The Programme Committee and the ISHS are very grateful for the work done by Dr. W.M. Kliewer for this Acta number 206, titled Grapevine Canopy and Vigor Management Symposium.

Secretary-General I.S.H.S.

Hieko H. van der Borg

PREFACE

This publication contains nine papers that were presented at a Symposium entitled "Grapevine canopy and vigour management practices for improvement of vine microclimate and grape and wine quality" on August 18 1986, at Davis, California, held in conjunction with the XXII International Horticultural Congress.

There is currently considerable world-wide interest in vineyard canopy management practices and much progress has been made in this area over the past few years. Since temperature and light are so important in determining the composition and quality of grapes and both are markedly influenced by canopy management practices, these two areas were reviewed to provide the basic information needed to understand why various canopy management practices are used. There are many cultural practices that can be used to help control shoot vigour, improve canopy microclimate and grape and wine quality. Those covered in this Symposium were irrigation management, fertigation, vine spacing, trellis-training systems, growth regulators, rootstocks, shoot topping and leaf removal in the fruiting region. These subject areas were reviewed and new information was provided in many of the areas.

The Symposium was truly international with speakers from Australia, France, Israel, Italy, New Zealand, Switzerland and the USA represented. Approximately 550 people attended the Symposium attesting to the popularity of the subject area. Phillip Freese from Robert Mondavi Winery chaired the morning session and Tucker Catlin from Sterling Vineyards chaired the afternoon session. Wine growers of California and Sonoma Couty Vineyard Technical Group served as sponsors for the Symposium. The financial contributions of these two organisations, as well as Beringer Vineyards, Domain Chandon, E & J Gallo Winery, Joseph Phelps Vineyards, Robert Mondavi Winery, Simi Winery and Sterling Vineyards are gratefully acknowledged.
