Abstract:
Developed Countries have already shown their role in assisting Less Developed Countries to meet their demand for improving technology in many field, including agriculture technology to increase food production.
Much progress has been achieved, mainly due to the rapid development in the genetics and breeding of cereals and legumes, and to the increase in knowledge of the physiology of crop production.
The development of horticulture science in the DC's has been very remarkable, and sometimes acts as the pioneer of progress in many fields to other crop science disciplines.
How is the role of DC's in assisting the LDCs in developing their Horticulture programs? The development of Horticulture more or less parallels the welfare of the people.
Many LDCs are still struggling to solve their main problem, that is fighting hunger or achieving self relience in food.
It is interesting to be involved in a Symposium on Postgraduate training for development from an International perspective.
It is interesting to think that the DCs have been assisting and will continue to assist in the training of horticulturists from LDCs, due to their prominence in horticulture science and commitment to the economic development of LDCs through foreign assistance.
Many officials from LDCs are sent abroad to increase their ability in doing research, in planning and implementing projects etc.
How can these be achieved, and what kind of problems are faced while studying in the DCs, and what are the expectations for or suggestions to overcoming those problems - all will be discussed here.
I am not familiar with the situation in other LDC, I'll mainly describe Indonesia's needs and experience.
I hope from the discussion, similarities between LDC will came to surface.
