POSTGRADUATE TRAINING IN HORTICULTURE FOR DEVELOPMENT: A LATIN AMERICAN PERSPECTIVE

Author:   M. Holle
Abstract:
This analysis of appropriate post graduate training in horticulture for development will consider three stages: 1) Pregraduate environment and experience; 2) training in a developed country graduate school; and 3) post degree career evolution. A few key aspects will be emphasized in each stage.

Pregraduate environment and experience tend to emphasize accumulation of information and lack hands-on experience in general techniques (e.g. typewriting, library searches, etc.) and practices in horticultural crop production. The selection process for graduate school will be commented on.

Training in graduate school (USA, Europe) should emphasize problem solving and advanced overall science. It also should foster development attitudes and values, deemphasizing first world one's. Special individual programs including home country research experience (e.g. thesis work) are essential.

Further career evolution involves issues such as brain drain; backup of the developed alma mater or of developed country scientists; and strong connections with the socioeconomic and horticultural reality of the home country.
