Abstract:
To a very considerable extent the growth of universities and the growth of empires appear to have been related.
It was the Greek and Roman empires that nurtured the classical scholars whose influence was exerted wherever the empire spread.
So too the British Empire, encompassing the globe as it did in the time of the emergence of modern science, spread its influence over a significant number of countries.
The legacy of such action can be seen today in the postgraduate training programmes of universities and colleges in former British Commonwealth countries as well as in Britain itself.
The British Commonwealth perspective of postgraduate training comes sharply into focus when comparison is made with other significant regions of the developed world; the European and the American regions for example.
