Abstract:
Horticultural courses being offered at European universities are more or less different from one country to the other; general statements are nearly impossible.
But, the final objective of all programs is to provide students with scientifically based qualifications for a profession in (European) horticulture.
Overall course objectives are important.
It is up to each university to make arrangements in developing aid or not.
Receiving a student from a developing country the university will have to verify whether he has the appropriate qualifications to follow the course.
Short-term courses and postgraduate training in connection with research projects in developing countries (sandwich courses) are more effective than graduate courses.
Bringing into focus the effectivity of developing aid, European universities in the first place should be engaged in training of university staff for developing countries.
European universities can offer scientists, fundamental knowledge and facilities while the developing countries offer graduate students for training and new subjects for applied research.
