Authors:   Heiko H. van der Borg, M.A. Nichols, H.C. Bittenbender
Abstract:
The Programme Committee of the XXIInd International Horticultural Congress in Davis decided in consultaion with the American Society for Horticultura Science and the ISHS to publish the papers of the one-day symposia and of some of the workshops held during this Congress.

The ASHS will publish the proceedings of 23 symposia and one workshop in HortScience while the ISHS will publish in 12 volumes of Acta Horticulturae 8 symposia, 3 workshops and a compilation of papers on different economic aspects presented in different sessions.

We will publish these volumes in the first half of 1987.

This will be made possible with the important assistance we have received from the moderators and from the authors by using the proposed ISHS-publishing system.

The Programmed Committee and the ISHS are very grateful for the work done by Dr. M.A.Nichold and Dr. H.C. Bittenbender for this Acta number 204, titled Postgraduate Trainiong for Development.

Secretary-General I.S.H.S.

PREFACE

The Commission for Education and Training of the International Society for Horticultural Science was formally established at the Council meeting in As, Norway in 1984, following discussion at the Council Meeting two years earlier in Hamburg, West Germany.

One of the objectives of the Commission is to organise meetings and symposia on special topics relevant to Education and training. The symposium on "Postgraduate Training for Development" held at Davis California, USA as a part of the XXII International Horticultural Congress is the first of what is planned to be an ongoing series of International meetings throughout the world on horticultural education and training.

This particular symposium was organised jointly with the American Society for Horticultural Science's working group "International Concerns in Horticultural Education".

Education and Training is an essential requirement for effective research, extension, and production, and this need is particularly acute in the less developed countries, where the lack of trained personnel (almost) always means that training at the postgraduate level must be carried out overseas, more usually in a developed country with a temperature climate. Some doubts have been expressed regarding the relevance of postgraduate training in such situations where the physical and socio-economic environment can be so different from the students home country.

The purpose of this symposium was to examine postgraduate training for such students, both from the students point of view, and from the point of view of the trainers.

The importance of the subject can best be judged by the large attendance at the symposium, when in competition with alternative programmes offered at the same time at the Congress.

We wish to thank all the speakers for their contributions, Dr. U. Menini (FAO) for opening the symposium and the organising committee of the XXII IHC for fitting the symposium in to an already full programme.

M.A. Nichols, Chairman, ISHS "Commission for Education
and Training".

H.C. Bittenbender, former Chairman, ASHS Working Group.
"International Concerns for Horticultural
Education".
