Abstract:
Initial work from 1981 with homogeneous groups of small fruit growers has led to kiwifruit, nectarine, apple and boysenberry monitoring.
The paper traces the psychology of involvement of growers and students in groups and the learning and teaching process developed.
The whole tree or vine approach necessitates integration of disciplines and indicates research direction.
The method has altered the course of advisory work to the extent that target pruning and mathematical crop loading techniques are being used by growers and there is a greater emphasis on integrating economics into scientific, technical and husbandry decisions.
The application of the systems approach to teaching is described whereby students take a learner orientated, multi-disciplinary, problem solving approach to crop and property study.
