DETERMINANTS OF THE VOLUME AND STRUCTURE OF U.S. STILL WINE IMPORTS FROM FRANCE

Authors:   V. Hervouet, D. Blandford
Abstract:
The paper presents the results of research into the determinants of imports of French still wine by the United States. Least squares regression was used to estimate annual import equations for Bordeaux, Burgundy, other still quality wines and table wine. In each equation, French wine imports are sensitive to both real prices and income. As imports have increased, price elasticities have declined substantially. The impact of changes in the exchange rate and the increase in disposable income are evaluated over the period 1981–84. For each category of wine, the appreciation of the dollar against the franc has had a larger impact on import volume than the growth in U.S. disposable income.
