ECONOMIC IMPACT OF MARKETING PEACHES IN ALTERNATIVE SIZE CLASSIFICATIONS

Authors:   G.J. Wells, R.S. Monson, M.J. Delwiche
Abstract:
Southeastern peaches are often times marketed in "ups" packs. Examples are "2 inch and up" and "2–¼ inch and up." How many peaches fall into the "ups" category varies widely from one pack to another. This variability raises uncertainty that may be reflected in the financial arrangements. Packing peaches in a method which is alternative to the existing "ups" method raises the possibility of financial gain. To investigate this possibility an interactive computer program is developed which allows packers to assess the potential financial gain or loss of alternative packing strategies. The alternative strategies considered are; (1) break "2 inch and up" packs into 2 inch packs and "2–¼ inch and up" packs, and (2) break "2–¼ inch and up" packs into 2–¼ inch and "2–½ inch and up" packs.
