Abstract:
Total per unit costs for a finished flat of 48 impatiens produced from either bare-rooted seedlings or plugs were determined for small (900 m2 – 2 249.9 m2), medium (2 250 m2 – 8 999.9 m2), and large (9 000 m2 – 45 000 m2) bedding plant producers.
Economies of size were exhibited for both methods of production.
Small, medium, and large conventional producers had total per unit costs of $4.084, $3.415, and $2.662, respectively.
Total per unit costs for the small and large plug producers were less than the same sized conventional producers.
Large plug-producing firms were classified as non-automated or automated.
The small, large non-automated, and large automated plug producers had costs which were $0.171, $0.092, and $0.235 less, respectively, than the conventional producers.
Medium plug-producing firms had costs $0.012 greater than the medium conventional firms.
