ISHS Acta Horticulturae 201: Manipulation of Ethylene Responses in Horticulture, XXII IHC

EFFECTS OF ETHYLENE EXPOSURE ON FLOWERING OF NARCISSUS TAZETTA 'GRAND SOLEIL D'OR'

Authors:   H. Imanishi, D. Yue
Abstract:
Exposure of marginal-sized bulbs of Narcissus tazetta 'Grand Soleil d'Or' to ethylene for 1 – 3 hours was sufficient to induce flowering. This promotive effect of ethylene was diminished by exposures longer than 18 hours and nullified by exposure for 48 hours. Repeated applications of ethylene for 1 – 3 hours daily were not detrimental. The maximum effect of ethylene was obtained at concentrations of 0.75 μ1/1 or higher. The promotive effect of ethylene was stimulated by high temperature during exposure.

Ethylene was also effective in promoting flowering of marginal-sized bulbs stored for up to 10 months at 1°C from early July. In this case, the cold stored bulbs had to be kept at 30°C for 3 – 7 days before the ethylene application.
