ISHS Acta Horticulturae 201: Manipulation of Ethylene Responses in Horticulture, XXII IHC

EFFECT OF SILVER THIOSULPHATE (STS) ON THE VASE LIFE AND BUD DROP OF WINTER FLOWERING SWEET PEA (LATHYRUS ODORATUS L.)

Authors:   K. Ohkawa, K. Sumitani, S. Satoi, I. Hayashi, K. Yamamoto
Abstract:
Winter-flowering sweet pea in a greenhouse is a new item because it is an energy saving crop, and STS pre-treatment is very effective in prolonging flower keepability. Optimum duration of pre-treatment with STS depends on the concentration 60–120 minutes with 0.2 mM, 30–60 minutes with 0.4 mM, 20–30 minutes with 0.8 mM, 10–20 minutes with 1.6 mM, and 8–12 minutes with 4.0 mM. The problem with winter-flowering sweet pea is that flower buds easily drop, especially when cloudy and rainy weather continues for two or three days.

Spraying 0.4 mM of STS around the growing point every 4 weeks almost completely protects buds from dropping and as a result the number of buds per stem, and stem length conspicuously increase. Injury from STS appeared only on old leaves.
