ISHS Acta Horticulturae 201: Manipulation of Ethylene Responses in Horticulture, XXII IHC

THE EFFECTS OF CO2 ENRICHMENT AND ETHEPHON APPLICATION ON THE PRODUCTION OF TOMATO TRANSPLANTS

Authors:   L. Woodrow, B. Grodzinski, A. Liptay
Abstract:
The production of hardy transplants is a key to a uniform stand of processing tomatoes in Ontario. Domestic transplant material must be grown in the greenhouse in the early spring and it is desirable to minimize production time and cost. The growth of transplants at elevated CO2 levels has been investigated as a means of producing vigorous transplants. Ethephon has been used as a pre-transplant treatment to improve survival in the field. Plant response to ethephon application was evaluated under ambient (300 ul/L) and enriched (1 000ul/L) CO2. High CO2 and ethephon treatment resulted in heavy, compact transplants. Dry matter accumulation and partitioning, plant morphology, and major carbohydrate composition were determined as indicators of altered plant metabolism.
