ISHS Acta Horticulturae 201: Manipulation of Ethylene Responses in Horticulture, XXII IHC

EFFECT OF ETHEPHON ON THE CAROTENE CONTENT OF EARLY PLANTED CARROTS

Authors:   T.A. Bewick, L.K. Binning, P.W. Simon
Abstract:
Field plots were established in commercial carrot (Daucus carota) plantings in 1984 and 1985 on Houghton muck soils. Ethephon, (2-chloroethyl)phosphonic acid, was applied at various rates and timings. Results from 1984 indicated a significant increase in the micrograms of carotene per gram of fresh weight in carrots treated with ethephon at the rate of 280 g a.i./ha. Results from 1985 indicated a significant increase in the micrograms of carotene per gram of dry weight in carrots treated with ethephon at the rate of 280 g a.i. or 560 g a.i./ha.
