BREEDING TOMATOES FOR PROCESSING IN INDIA; PRESENT STATUS AND FUTURE PROSPECTS |

| Abstract:
Tomatoes are annually grown on nearly 80,000 hectares in India constituting 1.5 per cent of the world area (table 1). The yields per hectare average about 10 tons, comparing poorly to a world average of 17.4 tons (FAO Production Year Book, 1982). Presently, an estimated 2 per cent of the total production in India, values at 50.3 million rupees annually (approx. $4.2 mill.), is used for processing into various tomato products. The most important processing areas in India are the states of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and the Union Territory of Delhi (table 2). Karnataka accounts for 25 per cent of total production of processed tomatoes. Among the various products tomato ketchup is the predominant item within the industry. | |
