ISHS Acta Horticulturae 200: II International Symposium on Processing Tomatoes, XXII IHC

USEFUL TRAITS TRANSFERRED IN PROCESSED TOMATOES THROUGH INTERSPECIFIC CROSSES

Authors:   F. Saccardo, Luigi M. Monti
Abstract:
Wild species of tomato (Lycopersicon peruvianum, L. hirsutum, L. Pimpellifollum and Solanum pennellii) were crossed and backcrossed to different cultivars of processing tomato. From F2BC3 on, selection was performed for disease resistance and for morphological traits. Several F5 lines were obtained resistant to Verticillim dahliae (race 1), Fusarium oxysporum (race 1), Phytophtora infestans (race T1) and to Tabacco Masaic Virus; for TMV the resistance was ascertained to be due to Tm-2 (2) gene. These lines showed also agronomic positive traits, such as high contemporary ripening, high number of fruits per cluster, earliness. Fruit quality analysis demonstrated progress also in color, firmness, soluble solid and sugar/acidity ratio.
