ISHS Acta Horticulturae 200: II International Symposium on Processing Tomatoes, XXII IHC

RESEARCH AND EXPERIMENTAL DEVELOPMENT (R&ED) PROGRAMMES ON TOMATOES FOR PROCESSING — A BROAD SURVEY

Author:   C. A.M. Portas
Abstract:
The state-of-art of R&ED activities for the period 1981–85 is presented. Answers to a questionnaire form sent to more than one hundred institutions and scientists are analysed and a broad review of scientific publications reported. Nature and classification of R&ED activities in eight groups of general specialities, allocation of resources and relationships with type of work and destination of tomatoes were studied. Edition of specialized books, journals, circulars and bulletins is also mentioned.

Some general conclusions are drawn regarding relations between R&ED activities, institutions involved and kind of processing industry. Most of the countries do not have R&ED programmes coordinated in a national (or state) level and there is a general connection between dimension of tomato industry, scientific development of the country and resources allocated to R&ED activities. Breeding, cultivar evaluation and cultural practices are the leading specialities.
