ISHS Acta Horticulturae 20: Symposium on Vegetable Storage

EFFECTS OF CALCIUM ON STORAGE ROT IN IRRADIATED AND NON-IRRADIATED CARROTS

Author:   J.P. Skou
Abstract:
For more than nine years the effects of ionizing radiation on carrots have been studied at Risö. The aim has been to elucidate the possibilities of using irradiation for sprout inhibition in carrots.

It was found that the application of ionizing radiation increased the susceptibility to microbial attacks, not only in carrots, but in several fruits and vegetables. Studies on the causal relations of this by-effect were therefore added. Carrots may serve as an excellent material for such studies.

This paper gives a survey of the general aspects of the calcium effects. It summarizes the author's own results, which will appear in detail elsewhere, and refers to results from related studies.
