Abstract:
A cold mass of Pacific Ocean water, called the Humboldt Current, flows from South to North parallel to the Peruvian coastline.
It moderates weather patterns of the western slopes of the Andes, and allows temperate zone fruit tree species to be grown with economic success - even at sea level - in strictly tropical latitudes.
This report mentions the marketing limitations of traditional varieties that are still being grown for small-scale local fresh markets.
Purposes, sources and criteria in searching for improved genetic material are outlined.
Dormancy management techniques, as applicable to local conditions, are described in detail.
A brief mention is made of new cultivars that have recently been introduced with commercial success.
Constraints, outlook and future needs are indicated as a basis for further thought and research.
