ISHS Acta Horticulturae 199: II International Workshop on Temperate Zone Fruits in the Tropics and Subtropics

OBSERVATIONS ON APPLE PRODUCTION IN PERU

Author:   O. Hoffman M
Abstract:
Apple production areas situated between 20 and 1200 meters above sea level were visited in March 1985. The most common varieties are Delicious de Viscas, Valmore, Anna, Pachacamac, Winter Banana, Pero Manzano and Hubber. Quince is the most commonly used rootstock, although San Antonio is sometimes used as an interstem. Training systems include spindle bush and palmette and the trees are planted at various densities.

Flowering is induced by withholding water in August, then applying defoliant sprays and irrigation. Light pruning is done during formation and maintenance of the trees. Fertilizer is applied according to tree age and soil fertility. Weeds are controlled using conventional methods, including herbicides. High incidence of insects and diseases requires quite rigorous pesticide application and preventive measures.

Fruits are harvested by hand and various types of containers are used for harvest and transport.

Yield per tree varies with variety, tree age, method of orchard management, planting system and density.
