ISHS Acta Horticulturae 199: II International Workshop on Temperate Zone Fruits in the Tropics and Subtropics

EFFECT OF PRUNING SEVERITY ON THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF ROUMI RED GRAPEVINES UNDER SHARKIA GOVERNORATE CONDITIONS

Author:   A.A. Tewfik
Abstract:
A trial was conducted with four different pruning severities (30+6, 30+8, 30+10 and 30+12), i.e., leaving 30 buds for the first 250 gm. of removed prunings plus 6, 8, 10 or 12 buds for each additional 100 gm. The Roumi Red grape cultivar was used during the seasons of 1981/82 and 1982/83. The total yield, number and weight of bunches, number of berries per bunch, total soluble solids(TSS), acidity, and TSS/acid ratio were recorded.

The total yield of the 30+6 treatment was significantly lower in both years than the other three treatments, which showed no differences among themselves. The 30+8 system appears best, as it resulted in the highest total yield over the two seasons. The treatments did not affect fruit quality except for TSS/acid ratio, which increased with pruning severity.
