ISHS Acta Horticulturae 199: II International Workshop on Temperate Zone Fruits in the Tropics and Subtropics

EVALUATION OF AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES IN PINEAPPLE PRODUCTION IN MERIDA STATE

Authors:   A.R.T. Rincon, J.A.M. Salas
Abstract:
Two systems of pineapple (Ananus comosus (L.) Merrill) production were compared, the traditional method, with single rows (9000 plants/ha) and manual weed control vs. an experimental method using double rows (15,000 plants/ha) and chemical weed control, with supplemental hoeing. The experimental system increased fruit size, number of fruits per ha, and total yield in both cultivars tested. Yields of 'Criolla Santa Cruz' in the traditional method were less than those of 'Capachera' (24,360 vs. 30,876 kg/ha), but little difference was evident in the experimental system (41,061 and 39,198 kg/ha, respectively).
