THE EFFECT OF SUMMER SPRAYS OF GROWTH REGULATORS ON BUD BREAK OF APPLE TREES IN THE SUBSEQUENT SPRING

Authors:   A. Ebert, F. Denardi, L.F. Hough
Abstract:
In nearly all apple production areas of Southern Brazil chilling is insufficient during winter, resulting in delayed foliation. In practice, this problem is partially overcome with a combination spray of mineral oil + dinitro-butyl-phenol (DNBP). Some mineral salts and growth regulators have also been found effective in breaking bud rest period. The combination of SADH + ethephon applied twice in mid-summer resulted in a significant increase in lateral bud break of apple seedlings in the subsequent spring. In apple selections with high chilling requirement the application of both growth retardants led to a pronounced improvement of lateral bud break. Minor differences in lateral bud break response to growth regulator treatments were observed in the cultivars Early Blaze and Blackjon with lower chilling requirement. Only the spray containing mineral oil + DNBP improved lateral bud break significantly in all apple selections and cultivars.
