Abstract:
"Shinseiki" and "Hengshan" are two major cultivated varieties of Asian pear (Pyrus serotina Rehd) in Taiwan. "Shinseiki" has a longer chilling requirement than "Hengshan" and is planted only at high elevations.
Grafting a chilled scion, with floral bud, of "Shinseiki" onto a "Hengshan" water shoot grown in the lowland, permits the harvest of fruits of both cultivars from one tree within one year.
The following factors are critical for success:
- Scion and stock must be compatible.
- Grafting must be timed to achieve synchronous flowering, thus avoiding competition between the scion and the stock.
